Rain-Mode Example

Rain‑Mode tones appear when the colony shifts into energy‑conservation behaviour during wet or humid weather.

These tones are softer, rounded, and slightly muted compared to normal activity patterns.

  • Softened fundamental — the base tone drops slightly in intensity.

  • Gentle midband activity — bees reduce wing‑based modulation.

  • Rounded harmonics — higher multiples (2x, 3x, 4x) become smoother and less pronounced.

  • Calm posture — bees cluster more tightly, reducing airflow noise.

Tone Characteristics

What This Tone Indicates

Rain‑Mode reflects a colony that is conserving energy and maintaining warmth. It is not a stress  tone — it’s a natural, adaptive behaviour that helps the hive stay stable during unfavourable  weather.

Acoustic Snapshot 

A typical Rain‑Mode recording feels like a soft, steady hum with minimal modulation. The hive sounds “rounded,” almost cushioned, with fewer sharp transitions or wing‑flutter signatures.

Behavioural Notes

  • Bees remain inside the hive.

  • Foraging pauses.

  • Ventilation activity reduces.

  • Movement becomes slower and more coordinated.

Compare With

  • Smooth Calm — similar softness but occurs during warm, stable weather.

  • Wind‑Modulated — has more airflow shaping and harmonic movement.

  • Steady‑Work — more rhythmic, active, and structured.
