COLONY BEHAVIOUR — OVERVIEW 

Bees express their internal state through coordinated actions inside the hive. These actions create recognisable acoustic patterns that can be grouped into Behaviour Categories. Each category represents a biological mechanism the colony uses to regulate temperature, airflow, humidity, movement, stress, or environmental challenges.

This page introduces the main Behaviour Categories and the behaviours inside each one. It is designed for beginners and provides a simple, intuitive starting point before exploring the detailed behaviour pages.

1. Thermoregulation Behaviour

Bees generate heat to keep the brood warm and stabilise the hive’s internal temperature. These behaviours appear during cool nights, cloudy mornings, or whenever the colony needs to raise warmth.

Ventilation Behaviours

Bees move air through the hive to cool it, reduce humidity, or respond to weather changes. Ventilation is one of the colony’s most important regulatory mechanisms.

Humidity Behaviours

Bees manage moisture inside the hive to protect brood, prevent mould, and stabilise the internal environment. These behaviours often overlap with ventilation.

  • Humidity Ventilation – airflow to lower moisture

  • Moisture‑Rise Suppression – reduced activity during humidity spikes

  • Humidity‑Linked Thermoregulation – combined heat + humidity response

Movement Behaviours

Bees reorganise themselves inside the hive to maintain density, protect brood, and adjust to environmental changes. Movement behaviours often accompany temperature or ventilation changes.

  • Movement Suppression – reduced activity during stable conditions

  • Reorganisation – coordinated repositioning

  • Density Shifts – tightening or loosening the cluster

  • Brood‑Zone Movement Patterns – movement around brood areas

Disturbance Behaviours

These behaviours appear when the hive is disrupted by external forces such as tapping, opening the lid, vibrations, or sudden changes at the entrance.

  • Light Disturbance – mild agitation

  • Mechanical Disturbance – hive‑wide reaction to physical impact

  • Entrance Disturbance – response to activity at the entrance

  • Internal Agitation – movement triggered inside the hive

Stress Behaviours

Stress behaviours indicate discomfort, instability, or colony distress. They are important early warning signs for beekeepers.

Included behaviours:

  • Stress Flicker – unstable acoustic flicker

  • Collapse Voids – gaps in activity

  • Chaotic Ventilation – disorganised airflow

  • Harmonic Instability – unstable tone structure

Environmental Response Behaviours

These behaviours appear when the colony reacts to weather conditions such as rain, wind, heat, or cold.

Included behaviours:

  • Rain Suppression – reduced activity during rain

  • Wind‑Modulated Shimmer – tone changes caused by wind

  • Heat‑Day Ventilation – airflow on hot days

  • Cold‑Day Heating – increased heat on cold days
