The Buzzlogs Tone Families are the foundation of how we read hive behaviour. Each family represents a distinct acoustic posture — from calm work to weather‑modulated tones to stress or alert states. These families help track daily patterns, environmental responses, and early signs of change inside the hive.

How Hive Tones are Built

Every hive tone is made from three acoustic layers. Together, they reveal the colony’s posture, energy level, and internal rhythm.

The base tone of the hive — the steady hum created by thousands of wings beating in unison. This is the hive’s “heartbeat,” and shifts in the fundamental often signal changes in colony mood or density.

Fundmental Frequency

Mid-Band activity

Harmonics

The textured middle layer where most of the hive’s communication happens. Mid‑band patterns show work rhythms, airflow changes, brood care, and environmental responses. This is where tone families begin to separate and show their unique shapes.

The upper layers created when bees intensify their wing posture or cluster behaviour. Harmonics reveal stress, alertness, excitement, or coordinated activity. They are the clearest indicators of transitions between calm, reactive, and high‑energy states.

Gentle, softened tones that appear when bees conserve energy during wet or humid weather.
