The 7 Acoustic Signs of Collapse Progression

Following the April Turning Point, a clear acoustic pattern emerged. When I listened back through the recordings after treatment, I realised the hive had been showing early stress fingerprints long before the physical signs appeared. These seven acoustic signs appeared in sequence as the hive moved from early strain toward structural failure.

They now form the foundation of my Varroa Stress Detection Manual — the first complete acoustic map I’ve built of varroa‑linked physiological decline.

Sign 1 — 60 Hz Mismatch

This is the earliest sign of internal regulation loss. The hive can no longer hold its usual 60 Hz anchor, and the fundamental begins to drift or wobble.

It’s subtle, but it appears before any visible structural change.

This mismatch is now one of my strongest early indicators.

Sign 2 — Upper Midband Thinning

Brood vibration begins to drop. The midband loses density as nurse bees struggle to maintain brood care. This thinning marks the first measurable reduction in hive output — a quiet but reliable sign that internal strain has begun

Sign 3 — Structural Drift

The tone loses its centre. The hive can no longer maintain its usual organised acoustic posture, and the sound begins to lean or shift.

This drift signals a deeper internal imbalance and is the point where the hive’s acoustic “shape” starts to change.

Sign 4 — Fundamental Sag

The harmonic layers fade.

The 2×, 3×, and 4× multiples lose strength and richness.

This weakening reflects metabolic fatigue and reduced coordinated vibration across the hive. It’s the moment where strain becomes unmistakable.

Sign 5 — Harmonic Fray

The fundamental becomes unstable or wobbles.

This instability shows that coordinated hive vibration is beginning to fail.

It is a major warning sign that the hive is approaching collapse.

Sign 6 — Ventilation Scatter

The tone breaks apart. Internal organisation collapses and the hive loses acoustic coherence.

This fragmentation is the final stage before full failure — the hive is no longer able to maintain its internal structure.

Sign 7 — Agitation Bursts

The final stage of physiological failure. The tone becomes diffuse, hollow, and unstructured.

Collapse tone marks the point where the hive can no longer maintain internal regulation. It is the acoustic signature of a hive that has reached its limit.

These seven signs emerged directly from the April collapse progression.

Together, they form a reliable early‑warning sequence that can be used to detect varroa‑linked stress before structural failure occurs.
