Representative Slice - Late April

When I look back at this slice from late April, I can see the exact moment my harmonic ladder stopped lining up with the clean, even spacing of a healthy hive. At the time, I thought it looked “a bit fuzzy,” but now I recognise it as the first sign that the hive was losing synchrony.

1. What the Slice Shows

Compared to my recovered hive:

  • the harmonics lack tight, coherent alignment

  • the spacing is less regular

  • the ladder is slightly warped

  • the hive sounds less synchronised

My current hive has a beautifully aligned harmonic structure. This slice does not.

Back in April, I interpreted this as:

  • “just a bit fuzzy”

  • “maybe wind or mic angle”

  • “normal variation in the harmonics”

But now I know:

This was my hive losing wingbeat synchrony. The colony was no longer able to maintain coordinated harmonic structure.

I use this rule:

If the harmonic ladder is not evenly spaced and parallel — synchrony is failing.

Healthy hives maintain perfect harmonic spacing. Misalignment is an early sign of internal stress.

5. Diagnostic Meaning

60 Hz mismatch indicates:

  • loss of wingbeat coordination

  • weakening colony synchrony

  • early neurological or metabolic strain

  • the hive’s internal rhythm beginning to break down

This is the first detectable acoustic sign in my varroa‑driven decline arc — subtle, but highly diagnostic.

This sign is now part of my Early Detection Manual.

In this slice, the harmonic ladder (300–600 Hz):

  • has uneven spacing

  • shows slight drift between harmonics

  • contains soft distortions

  • has subtle misalignment with the 60 Hz grid

  • looks less parallel than my baseline

This is the acoustic signature of my hive beginning to lose wingbeat coordination.
