When I look back at this slice from 23 April, I can see the very first structural failure in my April decline. At the time, I thought it was “a quiet day,” but now I recognise it as the moment the hive’s workstate began to falter.

1. What the Slice Shows

In this slice, the UMB (200–250 Hz):

  • is weaker than my baseline

  • has lost brightness

  • shows patchiness instead of a continuous band

  • is less dense than a healthy hive

  • has small gaps where activity should be steady

This is the earliest acoustic sign that my colony’s workstate was beginning to struggle.

2. How It Deviates From My Current Reference Hive (6 June)

Compared to my recovered hive:

  • the UMB lacks the busy, active shimmer

  • the tone is muted

  • the band is less populated

  • the hive sounds underpowered

My current hive has a lively, bright UMB. This slice does not.

3. What I Missed at the Time

Back in April, I interpreted this as:

  • “a quiet day”

  • “maybe cooler weather”

  • “just a low‑activity moment”

But now I know:

This was the first sign of metabolic strain. The bees were already struggling.

4. How I Detect It Instantly Now

I use this rule:

If the UMB is not bright, continuous, and confidently present — something is wrong.

A healthy hive always has a strong UMB. If it thins, the colony is losing energy.

5. Diagnostic Meaning

UMB thinning indicates:

  • reduced worker activity

  • early metabolic stress

  • possible brood‑heating strain

  • the beginning of a decline arc

This is the second detectable acoustic sign in my varroa‑driven decline.
