1. What the Slices Show

Compared to my recovered hive:

  • the midband lacks the steady, unified shimmer

  • the tone is rough and unstable

  • the band is full of bursts and flares

  • the hive sounds fractured

My current hive has a smooth, coherent ventilation signature. These slices do not.

3. What I Missed at the Time 

Back in April, I interpreted this as:

  • “wind noise”

  • “mic angle interference”

  • “just a messy recording”

  • “maybe bees fanning harder because of weather”

But now I know:

This was ventilation failure. The colony could no longer regulate airflow in a coordinated way.

I use this rule:

If the midband shows chaotic bursts instead of smooth, parallel texture — ventilation is failing.

Healthy hives produce a calm, unified midband. Scatter means the hive is losing internal control.

5. Diagnostic Meaning

Ventilation Scatter indicates:

  • breakdown of airflow coordination

  • thermoregulation instability

  • worker fatigue

  • metabolic overload

  • the hive entering a dangerous stress state

This is the sixth detectable acoustic sign in my varroa‑driven decline — and one of the clearest once you know what it looks like.

This sign is now part of my Early Detection Manual.

In these slices, the midband (120–250 Hz) displays:

  • irregular bursts

  • chaotic patches

  • non‑parallel clouds of activity

  • sudden flares

  • loss of smooth, even texture

  • randomised energy instead of coordinated fanning

This is the acoustic signature of my hive losing control of temperature and humidity regulation.

Early Ventilation Scatter

When I look back at these slices from 24–26 April, I can see the exact period where my hive’s ventilation system began to lose coordination. At the time, I thought it was “noise” or “messy patches,” but now I recognise it as the moment the bees could no longer regulate airflow in a unified way.
