When I look back at this slice from 24 April, I can see the exact moment my hive’s ventilation‑coordination layer began to collapse. At the time, I thought it looked “a bit soft,” but now I recognise it as the first sign that the hive was losing its ability to regulate airflow.
1. What the Slice Shows

In this slice, the LMB is already losing its structure.

The shimmer is uneven, the tone has dulled, and the band no longer holds its usual thickness.

Instead of the smooth, coordinated ventilation layer I sea in my recovered hive, this slice shows a hive struggling to maintain airflow.

The LMB wavers, thins, and breaks in places, revealing the earliest signs of ventilation instability.
2. How It Deviates From My Current Reference Hive (6 June)
Compared to my recovered hive:

the LMB lacks the smooth, even shimmer

the band is thin and unstable

the hive sounds underventilated
My current hive has a strong, coordinated LMB. This slice does not.
3. What I Missed at the Time
Back in April, I interpreted this as:

“a quiet patch”

“maybe they’re just not fanning much today”

“normal variation”
But now I know:
This was the first sign of ventilation fatigue. The bees were losing their ability to regulate temperature and humidity.
4. How I Detect It Instantly Now
I use this rule:
If the LMB is not straight, clean, and confidently present — ventilation is failing.
A healthy hive always maintains a strong LMB. If it thins, the colony is under stress.
