DETECTION SIGN 5 — Harmonic Fray

When I look back at this slice from 26 April, I can see the exact moment my harmonic ladder stopped behaving like a ladder and began to fray, tear, and break apart. At the time, I thought it was just “messy harmonics,” but now I recognise it as the hive’s internal structure beginning to collapse.

1. What the Slice Shows

In this slice, the harmonic ladder (300–600 Hz):

  • has ragged edges

  • shows broken or incomplete lines

  • contains fuzzy, torn patches

  • has missing harmonics

  • displays uneven brightness

  • looks chaotic instead of parallel

This is the acoustic signature of my hive losing internal coherence.

2. How It Deviates From My Current Reference Hive (6 June)

Compared to my recovered hive:

  • the harmonics lack smooth, coherent alignment

  • the ladder is fragmented

  • the tone is rough and unstable

  • the hive sounds disorganised

My current hive has a beautifully coherent harmonic structure. This slice does not.

3. What I Missed at the Time

Back in April, I interpreted this as:

  • “maybe wind interference”

  • “maybe the mic angle was off”

  • “just a messy recording”

But now I know:

This was my hive’s internal structure breaking down. The colony could no longer maintain coordinated airflow or wingbeat harmonics.

4. How I Detect It Instantly Now

I use this rule:

If the harmonic ladder is frayed, broken, or ragged — the hive is in structural distress.

Healthy hives maintain clean, parallel harmonics. Fray is a sign of serious internal strain.

5. Diagnostic Meaning

Harmonic Fray indicates:

  • loss of colony coherence

  • failing airflow regulation

  • metabolic overload

  • structural collapse in progress

This is the fifth detectable acoustic sign in my varroa‑driven decline — and one of the most serious before full collapse.
