Compared to my recovered hive:

  • the fundamental lacks the clean, stable hum

  • the tone is dull

  • the line is drooping

  • the hive sounds underpowered

My current hive has a strong metabolic hum. These slices do not.

Back in April, I interpreted this as:

  • “a quiet day”

  • “maybe they’re resting”

  • “normal variation in the hum”

But now I know:

This was my hive’s metabolic system failing. The bees were losing the ability to maintain internal energy.

I use this rule:

If the fundamental is not straight, bright, and stable — the hive is in trouble.

A healthy hive’s fundamental never sags. If it does, the colony is already under significant stress.

5. Diagnostic Meaning

Fundamental Sag indicates:

  • metabolic exhaustion

  • loss of colony cohesion

  • failing thermoregulation

  • the hive’s internal engine beginning to collapse

This is the fourth detectable acoustic sign in my varroa‑driven decline — and one of the most serious.

This sign is now part of my Early Detection Manual.

In these slices, the fundamental (~110–120 Hz):

  • drops downward instead of staying straight

  • becomes wobbly instead of stable

  • loses brightness

  • shows uneven amplitude

  • appears sluggish compared to my baseline

This is the acoustic equivalent of a heartbeat slowing under strain.

Early Fundamental Sag

When I look back at these slices from 24–26 April, I can see the exact period where my hive’s fundamental — the colony’s metabolic heartbeat — began to drop, wobble, and lose strength. At the time, I thought it was just “a low hum,” but now I recognise it as the hive’s engine struggling.
