A behavioural guide to the hive’s primary acoustic tone

Overview

The fundamental is the hive’s primary hum — the strong, low band that forms the base of every spectrogram. But it is not a single tone.

The fundamental is a composite behaviour tone, created by many micro‑behaviours happening at once. Its shape changes when the hive reallocates workforce, adjusts metabolic output, or shifts internal priorities.

Understanding the fundamental is the key to reading hive acoustics at a behavioural level.

The Fundamental Is a Frequency Created by Behaviour.

The hive does not produce one “fundamental frequency.” Instead, many behaviours contribute energy to slightly different parts of the fundamental’s shape.

Behaviour sources include:

  • heater bee thorax vibration

  • brood‑zone micro‑movement

  • general metabolic hum

  • subtle wing vibration

  • walk‑rate movement

  • positional adjustments

  • ventilation muscle activity

These behaviours weave together to form the complete fundamental.

When some behaviours quieten, the fundamental loses density in specific regions.

This is why the fundamental can:

  • sag 

  • split

  • blur

  • thin

  • change shape

It is a behavioural tone, not a single vibration.

The fundamental is a map of hive behaviour, not a single tone.

How to Read the Fundamental

Human eyes do not see exact Hz values. Human eyes see:

  • regions

  • density

  • softness

  • texture

  • blur

  • patches

To read the fundamental:

Find the strong low band - This is the composite hum.

Look immediately above it - This is the sag region.

Look for shape changes

  • sag widening

  • sag tightening

  • split regions

  • blur patches

  • thinning zones

Interpret behaviour

Every shape change corresponds to a shift in hive activity.

You are reading behaviour, not frequency.

The Fundamental as a Behavioural Indicator

The fundamental reveals:

  • metabolic output

  • heater bee activity

  • brood‑zone movement

  • ventilation behaviour

  • workforce allocation

  • hive strategy

  • stress vs suppression vs collapse

  • recovery patterns
