April Turning Point

When I think back to April, I didn’t realise at the time that the hive was already beginning to show early stress. The signs were there, but I didn’t yet have the acoustic patterns to match them. It was only after the treatment — when everything settled and I could compare the recordings — that I saw how early the changes had actually begun.

April became the turning point not because I recognised it immediately, but because looking back made the pattern unmistakable.

What I saw at the time

In April, the first things that stood out to me were physical signs, not acoustic ones.

Rising drop‑sheet numbers

The drop sheet started showing more debris and more mite‑like specks. Not a dramatic jump — just a steady increase that made me pay attention.

Seeing mites on bees

I had my first moments of seeing mites on live bees. Only one or two, but that was enough to confirm that something had shifted inside the colony.

These were the indicators that told me the hive was entering a new phase. At the time, they were the main clues.

What I didn't realise yet

Even though I was recording regularly, I didn’t recognise the acoustic changes in April. The hive still sounded “normal enough”, and without a reference point, the subtle shifts didn’t stand out.

It wasn’t until after the treatment, when the hive stabilised and returned to its calm baseline, that I could hear the difference.

Looking back at the late‑April recordings, I realised:

  • The midband had already started tightening

  • Harmonic multiples were thinning

  • Smooth and Steady‑Work tones were blending with early Stress/Alert tones

  • Reactive micro‑tones were appearing more often

  • The colony’s acoustic “shape” was changing weeks before I understood why

These patterns were there — I just didn’t know how to read them yet.

The moment of clarity (after treatment)

Once the hive was treated and the acoustics returned to their broad, calm baseline, everything clicked.

I could finally compare:

  • Before April

  • Late April

  • Post‑treatment

And that’s when I saw how early the stress had actually begun.

The acoustic changes in late April lined up perfectly with the physical signs I had seen at the time

— the rising drop‑sheet numbers and the mites on bees.

The acoustics were ahead of me. I just didn’t know how to interpret them yet.

Why April is my turning point

April is the month where:

  • The physical signs first appeared

  • The drop‑sheet numbers rose

  • I saw mites on bees

  • The acoustic changes quietly began

  • The hive started shifting away from its stable baseline

  • The earliest stress fingerprints showed up in the recordings

But the most important part is this:

I only recognised April as the turning point after the hive recovered. The acoustics revealed their patterns in hindsight.

This is what makes April so valuable in my detection system. It’s the month where the earliest changes appeared — even I didn't yet know how to hear them.

How this fits into my early‑detection system

April taught me that:

  • Physical signs and acoustics work together

  • Acoustics often show stress earlier than visible symptoms

  • Retrospective listening is one of the strongest tools

  • The hive’s baseline is essential for comparison

  • Early stress has a very specific acoustic fingerprint

April is now my anchor month — the point where I begin listening more closely, pairing physical observations with tone families, and watching for the earliest shifts.

It’s the month where the hive first whispered that something was changing.
