6. Rain Behaviour

Hive responses to rainfall, humidity shifts, and moisture load.

Rain behaviour signatures show how the colony regulates humidity, adjusts ventilation, reduces movement, and reorganises after rainfall. These patterns include pre‑rain activation, rainfall ventilation, heavy‑rain suppression, and post‑rain reactivation.

This category explains how moisture affects brood temperature, airflow, and internal coordination.

Rainfall Ventilation Tone

As humidity rises sharply inside the hive, bees adjust airflow corridors and increase fine‑grained ventilation pulses. The midband becomes slightly denser, shimmer softens, and harmonics remain aligned. This tone reflects active moisture regulation without stress.

Heavy Rain Suppression Tone

During heavy or prolonged rainfall, movement inside the hive reduces noticeably. Harmonics soften, upper bands thin, and the tone becomes quieter and more compact. This is a normal metabolic conservation response, not a stress signature.

Post‑Rain Reorganisation Tone

Once rainfall stops, the hive reactivates. Movement harmonics brighten, midband density increases, and shimmer returns. This tone marks the colony’s transition back to normal activity as humidity stabilises and foragers resume work.
