Sign 1 — 60 Hz Mismatch (How It Works)

What 60 Hz normally means

A healthy hive produces a stable fundamental tone around 60 Hz. It isn’t exact — it wobbles gently — but it stays centred. This stability comes from:

  • coordinated muscle vibration

  • brood‑frame resonance

  • nurse bee regulation

  • metabolic consistency

When the hive is healthy, the 60 Hz region looks straight, calm, and anchored.


What mismatch means

A 60 Hz mismatch happens when the hive can no longer hold that anchor. The fundamental begins to:

  • drift

  • wobble

  • flatten

  • lose its centre

  • slide off its usual position

It’s subtle — extremely subtle — and that’s why I didn’t see it at first.

But it’s the earliest detectable sign of strain.


Why mismatch happens

Mismatch appears when:

  • brood vibration drops

  • nurse bees are overextended

  • metabolic regulation weakens

  • internal coordination begins to fail

It’s the acoustic equivalent of a hive losing its footing.


How it looked in April

Looking back at my April recordings, the mismatch appeared before any obvious signs:

  • before midband thinning

  • before harmonic weakening

  • before instability

  • before collapse tone

It was there in early April — faint, quiet, almost invisible — but present.

The fundamental wasn’t holding its usual line. It was drifting just enough to show that the hive was struggling.

I didn’t know it yet, but this was the first warning.


Why it became Sign 1

When I reviewed April after the collapse, I realised:

  • the mismatch was the earliest change

  • it appeared before any structural failure

  • it predicted the Turning Point

  • it marked the beginning of decline

  • it was consistent across slices

This made it the first sign in the Detection Manual.

It’s the sign that tells you:

“The hive is losing internal regulation. Something is wrong.”


How to recognise it now

I now know what to look for:

  • the fundamental line is not straight

  • it drifts or leans

  • it loses its centre

  • it becomes slightly unstable

  • it doesn’t match the usual 60 Hz anchor

It’s subtle — but once you’ve seen it, you can’t unsee it.


Why Sign 1 matters in the Turning Point case study

Because it proves that the collapse didn’t come out of nowhere. The hive was signalling distress long before the dramatic changes.

Sign 1 is the moment the hive whispered: “I’m struggling.”

And April was the month I learned to hear it.
