Why I Started This Manual

This manual began from a difficult place. During the April collapse, I saw something I wasn’t prepared for — the quiet, unseen carnage that varroa leaves behind. I saw so many of my girls dying with mites attached to them. Some were trying to fly but couldn’t lift themselves. Some were dragging their bodies across the landing board. Some were already gone, lying still in small clusters that looked peaceful until I looked closer.

It was confronting. It was heartbreaking. And it was happening right in front of me.

I treated the hive, and the treatment helped — it truly did — but it came too late for many of them. That experience stayed with me. It changed how I listened, how I watched, and how I understood the hive. It made the suffering visible in a way I couldn’t ignore.

This is why I started building this manual. It’s why I kept recording. It’s why I kept analysing the tone families and the slices. It’s why I kept going through April again and again until the pattern finally revealed itself.

I didn’t want to see that level of distress again. Not if I could help it.



The Hope Behind My Project

The April collapse showed me two things at once:

  • the reality of varroa damage when strain goes unnoticed

  • and the possibility of recovery when treatment is applied early enough

That contrast — the death before treatment, and the stability after — became the hope behind this entire project.

This manual will continue to grow as I record more hives and learn more about their acoustic behaviour. It began with loss, but its purpose is care.


Where the Manual Begins

From that experience, the first clear acoustic pattern began to form. The April collapse didn’t just reveal the suffering — it revealed the structure behind it. As I went back through the recordings, the tone families, and the slices, seven distinct signs appeared in sequence.

These signs became the backbone of this manual. They are the earliest and most reliable indicators I’ve found so far, and they give me a way to recognise strain long before it becomes visible at the entrance or on the landing board.

The 7 Varroa Stress Detection Signs

Sign 1 — 60 Hz Mismatch

The earliest sign of internal regulation loss. The hive can no longer hold its usual 60 Hz anchor, and the fundamental begins to drift or wobble. This mismatch appears before any visible structural change.

Sign 2 — Midband Thinning

Brood vibration begins to drop. The midband loses density as nurse bees struggle to maintain brood care. This thinning marks the first measurable reduction in hive output.

Sign 3 — Structural Drift

The tone loses its centre. The hive can no longer maintain its usual organised acoustic posture, and the sound begins to lean or shift. This drift signals a deeper internal imbalance.

Sign 4 — Harmonic Weakening

The harmonic layers fade. This weakening reflects metabolic fatigue and reduced coordinated vibration across the hive. It is the point where strain becomes unmistakable.

Sign 5 — Fundamental Instability

The fundamental becomes unstable or wobbles. This instability shows that coordinated hive vibration is beginning to fail. It is a major warning sign that the hive is approaching collapse.

Sign 6 — Structural Fragmentation

The tone breaks apart. Internal organisation collapses and the hive loses acoustic coherence. This fragmentation is the final stage before full failure.

Sign 7 — Collapse Tone

The final stage of physiological failure. The tone becomes diffuse, hollow, and unstructured. Collapse tone marks the point where the hive can no longer maintain internal regulation.


These seven signs emerged directly from the April collapse progression. Together, they form a reliable early‑warning sequence that helps me detect varroa‑linked stress before structural failure occurs.
